Monica Vitti, RIP
In the past two years, I watched (or re-watched) Monica Vitti’s four classic Antonioni films:
I know I’ll sound like an annoying boomer, but we’ll never recreate that classic era of film.

A slightly off-center perspective on monetary problems.

Monica Vitti was one of my favorites, together with Claudia Cardinale.
Here she is pictured with Alain Delon, which reminded me of Marie Laforet and the movie A Plein Soleil (with Delon and Maurice Ronet).
The Talented Mr Ripley never got near A Plein Soleil!

Marcus, I actually like both versions quite a lot. Perhaps because it’s such an awesome movie plot.

Amen.
Perhaps in that era (Antonioni, Goddard, Truffault and othres adjacent) we can get a little taste of what the music world of c. 1800 Vienna was like.
A post-boomer myself, I always felt the declarations of “fear of nuclear war” as a driver of social sentiment was melodramatic and performative. I still think so, mainly. But L’Eclisse made me see some thinking along those lines was sincere and useful. Perhaps because Antonioni is not saying it is causal, but just lets it resonate.

Off-topic. Interesting new George Soros piece out recently.
“China’s Challenges”

The piece touches on both economics and politics.
The last paragraph seems to have strong words: “It is to be hoped that Xi may be replaced by someone less repressive at home and more peaceful abroad. This would remove the greatest threat that open societies face today.”

I’m late gen X and agree with you – have been especially facinated with Antionioni ever since I caught the exact scene from “L’eclisse” you have in the picture on some strange Hungarian tv station back in my high scool days. I’m particulary fond of “la notte”, I believe it’s the most underrated from the trilogy.

I don’t know, I think Sumner might be a racist.
He is praising a white woman who is part of the patriarchy.
She wasn’t a good actress. She was just a racist dumb white, or cracker dah.

Dzhaughn, Good points.
Ricardo, Agreed. Unfortunately, I don’t expect the next leader to be better; the world is becoming more authoritarian. And the greatest threat today is Putin. Xi Jinping is second.
Lucian, La Notte is also my favorite. It’s perhaps the most accessible of the four films.
