You knew this was coming
Why am I not surprised?
Chinese President Xi Jinping recently consolidated power. Trump told the gathering: “He’s now president for life. President for life. And he’s great.” Trump added, “I think it’s great. Maybe we’ll give that a shot someday.”
There are a lot of people in China who believe in classical liberal principles. At one time they respected America.

Scott, how do you reconcile your view (or least, my perception is that this is your view) that political leaders aren’t that important for determining political and economic outcomes with your statement here about the importance of presidential character?
5. March 2018 at 21:45
Tom, To the extent that presidents matter, character is important. My point is that the zeitgeist has more influence on the broad sweep of history. Thus neoliberalism did not happen because Reagan and Thatcher happened to win elections.

Yes; neoliberalism had already begun to be implemented by the 1970s.
