More progress on the crusade to legalize marijuana:
Yesterday, on the same day that New York became the 16th state to legalize recreational marijuana, legislators in Santa Fe approved a bill that will add New Mexico to that list. The Cannabis Regulation Act passed the state House by a vote of 22–15 and the state Senate by a vote of 38–32 during a special session convened by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, who is expected to sign the bill soon.

Our host is a pothead? I tried it once (did not inhale) and truth is, for smart people, pot is fine, but for sub-80 IQ people, it’s likely to lead to problems. Still, it should be legalized, just to cut down on organized crime.

I assume Joe Biden, like most national politicians, has an army of consultants who tell him what to say to maximize his chances of winning the next election. So is Biden following his own views despite the majority of the public, or do his consultants think the public supports pot legalization “in theory” like they support free speech, free trade, immigration, and so many other things “in theory,” but find themselves recalcitrant when faced with actual policies that pursue those things? The latter deserves some consideration. Opinion polls are often too abstract to gauge what people really think (otherwise marijuana legalization would already have passed in most states).

The only reason it hasn’t passed on most states is because it hasn’t been on the ballot in most states. Many states do not rely on referenda. It would pass almost everywhere today.

I think this is a big mistake.
Billions of dollars have been spent lobbying politicians to pass cannabis for recreational use, because billions have been invested in startups. The special interest groups are buying up politicians as I write this.
But the effects on the economy will be palpable.
There is a lot of evidence that shows Marijauana leads to more dangerous drugs, and the reason is because over time one needs more and more marijuana to achieve the same high.
American society is already one of the least educated societies in the world. You can point to 33% of the population having bachelor’s degrees, but 99% of those bachelors degrees are obtained at watered down diploma mills. Tests would indicate that the average Russian High School student is more educated than the average American with a Bachelor’s degree.
And you think a nation of drug addicts is going to permit you to “catch up”.
I suspect innovation will suffer tremendously. And the CCP will be happy to see a drugged up society. A bunch of lazy uneducated idiots are much easier to control.

ankh, LOL. You complain that the government should allow free markets, and then you want to ban pot. I guess “freedom” only applies to activities that ankh personally approves of.
BTW, the bad things that were we warned would happen with pot legalization have not happened in the states that legalized. Why haven’t the drug warriors apologized for their lies?
