David Beckworth will be joining the Mercatus Center

I’m very pleased to be able to announce that David Beckworth will be joining us full time.  He will be a senior research fellow at the Program on Monetary Policy.

Most of you probably already know that David has been blogging at Macro and other Market Musings, which might well have been the first market monetarist blog.  He also put together Boom and Bust Banking:  The Causes and Cures of the Great Recession, another important market monetarist document.  And he’s done some excellent research on recent monetary issues, such as the implications of the Fed becoming a “monetary superpower”.  He is now doing a series of podcasts where he interviews top monetary economists.  David has also written lots of op eds with Ramesh Ponnuru of the National Review.  And he’s also a great guy, much more polite than me.  I’m thrilled that he was willing to give up a tenured position to join our group.

PS.  There’s a new video out promoting my new book on the Great Depression.

PPS.  I have a new post over at Econlog.

Imagine all the talent nearby for the next President to draw upon. I hope Mercatus trumpets its assets.

That was a slick video. Almost too slick. Next think you know Scott’s hired a professional web designer and this blog starts looking like Quillette!

I also thought the two-finger typing was a joke. What barbarity! I typically type on a Dvorak keyboard.

    Quick thoughts on Beckworth…..

    Dec 2015:
Ted Cruz seeks highest office by glibly, cavalierly asserting his desire to practice “carpet-bombing”.

    Jan 2016:
David Beckworth, in support of Cruz, writes puff piece in NYT, portraying Cruz as an Economic heavy hitter.

Ergo, everything flowing from Beckworth mouth or pen = fruit of the poisonous tree………

    Martin Heidegger comes to mind.

Ah, Scott Sumner promoting himself, his colleagues, his worldview, however flawed. One hand washes the other and together they wash the face, got it.

    Why am I not surprised.

Dvorak ‘s widow still types an occasional letter _ on a Dvorak , naturally. She also confirms a secret about her husband, inventor of the world’s fastest and most efficient typewriter keyboard.

    “Why am I not surprised.”

-I dunno. What do you mean by that? The Dvorak keyboard is better designed since I don’t have to move my fingers to the top and bottom rows as much. I find the QWERTY keyboard sometimes causes pain in my wrists when I type on it for too long, as I have to move my fingers up and down in such unusual configurations so much.

My favorite quote from the video was, “What the average person does is confuse the symptoms of the Depression with the underlying causes.” I would say the same is true of the Great Recession and this is why we have the rise of the far left and far right politicians around the world.

    Nard, You said:

“David Beckworth, in support of Cruz, writes puff piece in NYT, portraying Cruz as an Economic heavy hitter.”

You don’t know what you are talking about. Beckworth defended the claim that money was too tight in the fall of 2008. That’s all. I defended that claim too, it doesn’t mean I’d vote for the guy.

    Ray, You said:

“One hand washes the other and together they wash the face, got it.”

What a profoundly deep metaphor. Have you considered becoming a poet?

    Scott,

I can see why you and Beckworth want to be associated with the Mercatus Center and GMU. They have some very smart economists. Who doesn’t like reading Cowen and Caplan, for example? I think Boetke’s there too. Until I read his blog, I didn’t know there were Austrians who were real economists, as opposed to cultists.

David Beckworth says the Fed should clearly state that the additions to its balance sheet are permanent.

    Is this hyper-inflationary?

Scott, Yes, a good group to be associated with.

Ben, I will have a post on that at Econlog, up later this afternoon.
