Please don’t force me to become a Democrat
Ever since the 1990s, the Democratic Party has been on a steady downward path. Given that I wasn’t a Democrat in the 1990s, you might assume this is the last place I’d look today. Unfortunately, all the other parties are on even worse trajectories:
Not sure what these three people have in common. Some of them are very talented, perhaps all if you include “outrageous personality” as a talent. But the only commonality I can find is that all three are famous for making really offensive statements. So that’s how the GOP wants to advertise their party? “Join the GOP; we’re a party of trolls”.
If that’s their aim it won’t work, because no one can out-troll the new and depraved Libertarian Party:
This is highly offensive in at least two distinct ways. The exclusion of Trump and the inclusion of Cheney is an obvious nod toward that fact that the Libertarian Party is more upset at a brave woman who sacrificed her career to expose Trump’s treason, then they are by the fact that Trump tried to overturn a democratic election and make himself dictator.
Equally offensive is their mocking of those of us who understand the threat posed by people like Putin. This is something I’d expect to see on Russia TV, not a Libertarian Party website. I guess they don’t care at all about liberty for Ukrainians and other nations threatened by Putin. Unfortunately, as we learned in the late 1930s, problems that begin in Europe don’t always stay there. I expect that soon the LP will be touting “America First” advocates like Henry Ford and Charles Lindbergh.
The LP has slid so far down into the authoritarian nationalist sewer that it will take decades to wash off the stench. I may have to stop calling myself libertarian, for fear I’d be associated with these clowns.

Yes, I’m a Democrat, but not because I’m in love with the party. It’s because it’s the only rational option, despite the large number of bad policy ideas and often terrible politics. There’s at least some value in voting against extremist Democrats in the primaries so that the moderates can try to beat the right-wing extremists in general elections. Also, wokeism seems to be in decline though, unfortunately, industrial policy has been on the rise.

Historically, both the Republicans and the Democrats used to be liberal parties, with the GOP as the party of right liberals and Democrats as the party of left liberals.
Liberalism has evolved into what has been called in some places the managerial state: in my view it is still describable as liberal, because liberal priorities such as rights, freedoms and equality remain very important. Those who rejected this shift and preferred classical liberalism were generally known as libertarians.
In recent years, there has been growing dissatisfaction with liberalism. Look at it from the perspective of a middle-aged and middle class white American. Many Americans have died or been wounded in unnecessary wars. There are tax cuts which seem to benefit the very rich who don’t need anything else while the factories which used to employ millions of Americans have shutdown. In certain parts of the country, there are now a large number of foreigners who do not share the native stock’s culture or sometimes even the language. The education system is teaching the kids outrageous cultural ideas, like the notion they should celebrate the lives of people like Michael Brown or George Floyd while despising their own ancestors, and that they can be any gender they happen to feel like. If your kid is taken in by the gender ideology promoted in schools, society will allow your kid to choose as a kid to have life altering treatments and if you object you may lose custody of your kid. Social ties have frayed, there are many more deaths of despair than there used to be. Many people are lonely. Many people are afraid to speak their mind publicly for fear of reprisal by powerful individuals and corporations.
Liberalism, especially in its modern managerialism form, is very good at creating high GDP per capita levels and powerful states. If you are very bright, energetic and talented, or if you happen to be a bit of a weirdo by traditional standards, modern liberalism serves you well. But there are many, many people who are left behind.
As the years go by, those who are left behind are increasingly drawn to populism, first with Ross Perot in the 1990s and more recently with Donald Trump, and as liberalism keeps creating collateral damage, there will continue to be demand (and probably growing demand) for illiberalism.
Those who remain liberal, both left and right, have increasingly been finding their home in the Democratic party. The Republicans will either become the party of those who oppose liberalism, or they will probably cease to exist as a national contender with a new party taking their place (it’s already changed a lot – can anyone imagine the GOP running Mitt Romney again). There may also be a marriage between people who have traditional social values with people who have left economic values. The left/right binary may break into a liberal vs. nationalist binary or something like that.
Traditional libertarianism has been declining in recent years, so it makes sense that the LP was captured by one of the two groups I’ve described above.

There are lots of “strong” women who disagree with her, myself included, so it has nothing to do with being strong or weak there Mr. everyone is a racist, and everyone is a bigot. This is just more nonsense from the left; from the very party that has the most bigoted past.
Americans don’t buy this crap that the January 6th protestors were anti-american traitors, terrorists, and other crazy and abusive language (which you dish out but can’t take); every poll says that. the establishment is just lashing out because they feel threatened by both the left and the right populists, who want to remove their power. So what? Kings got angry too. It didn’t stop us.
Now, you don’t hold any meaningful positions. You have no sway, not even among your peers, but the people who are in power and don’t listen get voted out. That’s how democracy works. That’s why cheney is no longer there. Marsha Blackburn is also “strong” and she’s still there. I wonder why. Oh, maybe because she listens.
It’s beyond the pale to compare buffoons running around in costumes to “terrorists” and then to use the pretext of emergency to deny them a fair trial.
You are just part of the old guard, and you cannot accept the fact that the new generation is holding you accountable. If you are going to have “free trade” it better be free. That means no permits, no subsidies, no economic zones, etc, etc. Don’t claim mercantilism, under the banner of “international trade agreement” is actually “free trade” because people are not stupid. They might not know the reason why its failing, but they know it isn’t making their life better.
It also means no colluding once a year at a forum. We, the people, will hold you accountable. And we can do it better now than in the past, because information moves so quickly.
That’s another reason why the establishment wants to “control the web.”
Everyone on that list deserves to be on that list.
And you can choose whatever party you want Sumner; the left doesn’t want you either; they prefer sanders; and you don’t value liberty, so you’re not really libertarian. I think you’re just better off creating you’re own party. It will be incoherent, but you might find a few stragglers to join you.

I sometimes think that social media, writ large, has caused a flattening of media that is the source of much of this, though of course, much of the media deserved the criticism leveled at it. Just witnessing a bunch of right and left wing people lose their minds as a result of twitter or Facebook.
Exposing existing power structures has done some good, but with it comes a total collapse in trust in institutions and the rise of charlatans. I do think much of the GOP base had a “boy who cried wolf” with Trump, seeing the way every GOP is attacked, though of course its gone off the rails at this point.
The technologist in me doesn’t want that to be true, but perhaps it is.

John, Sure, that might be the lesser of evils, but it’s not much of a platform.
Justin, I’m not sure it’s helpful to define liberalism so broadly. Most of the people who opposed the Iraq War were liberals, and most of its supporters were conservative. I understand that many liberals supported it, but it was not a specifically “liberal” policy.
As for living standards of the working class, they’ve been hurt by big government policies in areas such as health and education. I view those more as “left wing” rather than liberal. Populist economic policies almost always fail, as we’ve seen all over the world.
Here’s something to think about. Would you describe places like Switzerland and Netherlands and Australia as liberal or populist? How does the living standard in those places compare to populist countries? I think it’s more complicated than you assume.

From what I’ve read, the party is focusing on getting ballot access in all 50 states first (the planned deadline is by 2024) before running its own candidates. However, they have already endorsed a couple dozen candidates in the real world (list linked below), and Yang spoke in Nevada to help the passing of its Top 5 (non-partisan primary + ranked-choice voting) reform.

Keep in mind that this is a very young party. Technically, the party is 13 months old (from Oct 2021), but it really only got off the ground this July when it merged with the Renew America and Serve America movements.

This year, the Forward Party leaders are taking a nationwide tour to meet with supporters and get input before developing a platform beyond voting reform. It’s still a work in progress.
You might even be able to get them to include NGDPLT, since it really is a party-neutral policy. I bet you could get on Yang’s podcast and discuss it with him (I’m sure you could use 6 degrees of separation to contact him; Tyler could probably arrange it).

The more life experience I’ve gained, the more painfully obvious it has become to me that elections are merely popularity contests. The majority of voters do not vote on the issues, but rather on who they think has the best personality. So is it any wonder that we end up with a bunch of elected officials who are weak on issues, but strong on personality? This goes for all portions of the political spectrum.

I kinda learned my lesson re: American “libertarians” with the Mises institute and the Rothbard / Rockwell / Hoppe crowd. Sounded interesting and iconoclastic enough and at first I fell for their shtick. Then the more I read the more I realized that they were all just a bunch of smug, race-baiting fascists. Not to mention the Montana “Freemen” and other surreal clowns with their simplistic worldviews. Like Chomsky, none of these realize that their very existence is predicated upon the good luck of having been born in 20th Century US with a strong state protecting them so they could in peace pursue their little sandbox plays.
Strangely, now that I took more to read Twitter (for information on the Ukraine war) the more I see that this infantile crowd is still alive and kicking, unfortunately intertwined with people and subjects I really like to hear and read about, such as human biodiversity (wrongthink apparently) and actual neoliberal thought. And even smart people sometimes lose all sense of proportion when touting their pet theories, I don’t know what it is with early 21st Century public discourse.
This not to say that things are better elsewhere in the world. Neoliberalism is a forbidden thought pretty much anywhere, if people even understand what is meant by that.

I was a dedicated Republican until 2008 when Palin was put on the ticket, that plus being unhappy about Iraq and how it was handled. Ever since then i have split my ticker on my votes which is what you should do Scott. The Dems are pretty bad but right now the GOP is just awful. Look at your trolls here. They actually represent a lot of mainstream GOP thought. That said, in any given election I think you will still find Dems who are of poor enough quality you shouldn’t vote for them and when you arent sure or know nothing about them the differences arent earth shattering if you are wrong.
DeSantis actually was wrong on his Covid management if you are counting deaths as your metric. Covid came to Florida late so they started off with an advantage but they caught up. Numbers at link. Some people will claim that is due to Fl having an older population but there are several states that are older like Vermont with much lower death rates. We also see that a very young state like Oklahoma has a very high death rate.

Crazy tweet. I wonder though that such a tweet reflects the staff more than the principals. That’s still bad. Republicans have a potentially very robust base of minority voters. I expect them to make more gains in Latino and African American communities for maybe the next decade or two. The GenX republicans are still steeped in the small government successes of the 80s and 90s and are much less racist than prior generations. They will be nominees for a while longer.
At the same time, the intellectual core of the party staff, seems to be hollowing out. That’s no surprise. Starting with the millennials, college students were solidly pro-democratic. To be at university and a Republican was to be fringe. Weird. Cut-off.
These are now the 20-40 year olds filling the staff roles and the pipeline for future candidates.
It is not good for Republicans.

There are a few brave souls, like Chomsky and Trump, who have very different politics, but who are willing to point out the truth. And then there are others, like Scott, who want countries to kneel to a global actor, and he wants Bolton and Bush, and Romney and the typical neo-con, neo-lib, status quo to remain unchanged.
The problem is everyone is tired of paying taxes for these “uniparty crusades.” This time the religion is the socialist state, and “human rights,” which in the old days meant really important things like the “right to life”, the “right to property” because property was an extension of your labor, etc, and all of that made a lot of sense because it was rooted in the state of nature. It was logically deduced.
Today, those rights include things like “a right to desirable work, and a right to social security,” which only exist in fantasy. They are abstract, subjective, socialist concepts, rooted in nothing of value.
Is sweeping the street desirable? I presume we should all just quit our work because it’s not “desirable.” What if the country is bankrupt? Do we have to spend 50% of our taxes on “social security” and what does “social security” even mean?
I really love number 28, which states the following: “Right to a Social Order that Articulates this Document.”
Talk about a vague definition.
What Brussels really means is that if you don’t follow the neo-liberal mercantilist order, than you will be in violation of their religion.

Challenging the duopoly will obv be tough, but there is room for optimism. Alaska already has Top 4, i.e. a non-partisan primary (NPP) + ranked choice voting (RCV). Nevada just passed Top 5; it needs to pass again in 2024 to go into effect, but given that it passed by 5%, I estimate there’s at least a 70% chance that it succeeds.
So that would result in a bloc of 4 Senators and 5 Representatives from states that are significantly insulated from extremist candidates. Particularly in the Senate, that would constitute a strong bulwark against any extremist faction gaining control.
Missouri also had a Top 4 proposal which just missed getting on the ballot this year (presumably due to a technicality; Better Elections, the group behind the proposal, said it got 300K signatures, well above the 180K needed).

And in 2020, a Top 4 bill (The Depolarizing Politics Act, or HB 360) was introduced in the Virginia legislature. (According to the VA bill tracking site, it seems to be stuck in committee as of 2020.) VA doesn’t allow direct ballot initiatives, but at least it’s a sign that the idea of NPP + RCV is spreading.
Washington state has a Top 2 open primary system, and Seattle just approved RCV. So there is a decent chance that voters might get the idea to package them together (and expand Top 2 to Top 4). And Maine already has RCV and open primaries; it’s a short step from there to go from open party primaries to a NPP.
Bottom line: 26 states allow statewide ballot initiatives, and Foward Party headquarters are rapidly being established in every state (I believe it’s up to 38 states now). If even a few of those states can pass Top 4/5 proposals, that bulwark can grow into a beachhead from which to launch further reforms. So Forward can still have a major impact w/o having to “win” in the sense of taking down half of the duopoly.

Stated differently, a very high % of Representatives and Senators are purely focused on satisfying the most extreme members of their party while completely ignoring all unaffiliated or opposite party members of their constituencies. Is it any wonder that both parties have moved to the extremes while moderates have disappeared?
Alaska has already provided good evidence that a NPP + RCV system can effectively ward off extremist attacks. Can you think of a reform that would be more effective and achievable than Top 4/5 to reduce polarization and political dysfunction in the US?

I expect her to croak soon, or die in one of her plastic surgery sessions, which are quite excessive, but if she doesn’t die from her 800 units of Botox, or from nudists running through her house, I’m sure the radical left will dispose of her in 2024.

They try to boil their ideas down to a few first principles that sound good (to them) but which in fact have little of the appeal they seem to imagine. For example, WHY is consent important? WHY should anyone care about something like maximizing satisfied preferences? It’s impossible to give compelling answers to any of these questions without telling a story that is itself wholly contingent and bound up with plenty of history and culture that is not at all universal. Essentially all of the attempts to do so that I have ever read have been laughable, and *in practice* it seems the arguments tend to meander back to some non-responsive claim like “libertarianism still seems better thab these other (usually 20th century) alternatives”. Once people realize this purportedly “neutral” ideology is just another creed for die-hard true believers they tend to drift away.

What the MSM actually said was that on the same day that Russia launched its biggest missile attack yet against civilian targets Poland was hit with a missile. Given the circumstances it was likely an accidental Russian missile but could be a Ukraine anti-missile. They reported NATO and Poland would investigate. That is what happened. So I trust the real version not the made up one.

What I think is that you can selectively choose headlines to “prove” whatever you want. The huge majority of outlets reported it correctly, and as noted this happened at the same time that Russia had its largest launch. It was quickly investigated by NATO and Poland and they quickly determined what kind of missile because its not hard to figure out. Ukraine is not going to launch missiles at Poland when it will only take about 20 minutes fo work to figure out it was one of theirs.
