Hawley’s rhetoric echoes progressives who say the government has a larger role in providing equal economic opportunity. He has been a vocal supporter of direct cash payments to Americans, even teaming up with democratic socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., recently on the issue.
But despite his interest in fiscal liberalism, Hawley breaks sharply from Democrats by embracing Trump’s cultural conservatism, skepticism of immigration and even his promoting of conspiracy theories about the 2020 election result — a potential new model for the party.
“Republicans need to have a broader conversation about what we’re going to do to support working people, working families in the middle of the country, where I’m from, but all across the country,” Hawley said. “So I hope that that’s the direction that we’re headed.”

Once again, in 2021 we should be finding excuses to give dollars to people that will spend them in America. So I don’t support universal basic income…but I do support one shot lump sums larger than the current stimulus checks. Dollars are good for one thing—buying things. So when the coal miners pension fund was short billions of dollars the Trump and Manchin didn’t devise a Rube Goldberg program like the asinine Opportunity Zones legislation to get them money—they simply threw billions at the pension fund so it could continue sending checks to the retired coal miners.

Too many regulations, and too much arrogance. The government busybody always thinks he is so much smarter, and has the answer. He enacts harmful policies that cater to one industry, or prop up big enterprise and hurt the smaller players.
Not working and living off UBI is a horrible life. Only an evil person who has no understanding of the human condition would propose such an atrocity. Humans need purpose in their life, not a check.
Please also remember that Mao was a nationalist. Stalin was a nationalist. The left can go too far; it’s not just the right.
And opportunity zones are a gift to the big man. To even get into an opportunity zone, economic zone, in Thailand, one must bribe govt officials. No small player can qualify. That is a tax gift to MNC.

Hawley also supports a wage subsidy rather than a minimum wage. I’ll give credit where it’s due on that.

I am actually not that surprised. Bernie always talks that he wants to make USA more like Denmark. But every policy he suggests seems to be aimed at making USA like a little bit shitty version of France. And why not? France is large and diverse melting pot country similar to USA. They also have very strong national ethos literally stemming from the same intellectual and historical background that formed Founding Fathers. Remove religiosity from American conservatism (as seems to be the trend) and you literally end up with French revolutionary ethos including how it affects the modern France that seems to turn more anti-imigration and many things that characterize Trumpism.
Now I know that your comment was more or less a jab and quite frankly it may not be as far off. Alternative scenario is no compromise between left and right and further radicalization pushed by very small but also very loud members on each side. And in the end the victor may be decided by street fights as it was in 1930s Germany. And the alternatives will be either National Socialism or Socialism in One Country that will eventually also degenerate into National Socialism as it almost always happened during the history.

I suppose Hawley is a worthwhile topic. But he must be about 50th of the list of relevance, don’t you think? Who controls the House, the Senate and the executive branch? I forget. Do they do ANYTHING worth commenting on? Of course they do, because you say they do. You even say you discuss it all the time. Those must be the essays I miss.

If we had a PR parliamentary system, it would be interesting to see what kind of party people or like Hawley and Cruz would be members of. Would it be a meanstream, historically centrist conservative party, or an extreme right-wing party?
Such a system might be better for the US.

– What A LOT OF people fail to understand/know is that the “National Socialist Party” started as a left wing party in the early 1920s in Germany. But when one Adolf Hitler and his buddies “invaded”/took over they changed it to a right wing party.
